What Will Happen to Brittney Griner Next?

The conviction and sentencing of the WNBA star and two-time Olympian Brittney Griner, wrongfully detained in Russia, leaves less “unknowns” for the ongoing diplomatic negotiations, a Northeastern expert says. 

Still, these negotiations need to be handled delicately, considering the current state of the relationship between Russia and the Joint States, says Alexandra Meise, an associate teaching professor in the School of Law at Northeastern.

Griner, 31, the U.S. women’s basketball player and two-time Olympic gold medalist, was found guilty of possession and trafficking of ordered substances and sentenced to nine years in a general penal colony on Thursday in the Russian city of Khimki near Moscow. 

“Having the verdict and sentence in this case by means of those previous ‘unknowns’ are now ‘knowns’ for purposes of the ongoing negotiations,” says Meise. “I do not think the sentence alone will changes the negotiations to drag out here.”

Griner was returning to Ekaterinburg, Russia, to play for the local women’s basketball team during the WNBA off-season, when she was detained at a Russian airport on Feb. 17 for possessing vape cartridges of hashish oil, an illegal substance in that country.

Testifying at the terresproperty in July, Griner said that she packed for the trip in a traipse and didn’t realize that the medical marijuana prescribed by her doctor was in her luggage. 

Her lawyers said they felt unsuccessful with the severe verdict and will be filing an intelligent. Griner’s sentence was much stricter than the average, they said, when a third of people convicted in a similar crime in Russia get parole. 

According to the Russian Criminal and Correctional Codes, a general penal colony is a correctional facility with dormitory-style living terms for mainly first-time offenders convicted for serious crimes. Inmates have to work six days a week and are granted six short and four long visits a year. They can employ about $148 on extra food items and essentials and right six parcels and six printed matters a year.

In the twitch of May, the U.S. State Department designated Griner as an American citizen wrongfully possessed by a foreign state. The State Department made Russia a “substantial offer” to free Griner and Paul Whelan, another American wrongfully detained in Russia since December 2018, according to White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.

Presumably, the offer implies a prisoner swap. Although it is widely reported that the U.S. noteworthy be offering Russia Victor Bout, an arms dealer condemned in 2011 on charges that include conspiring to kill American citizens, Russian media have hinted at several other Russian citizens serving sentences in American prisons that could be of uninteresting to the Russian government.

Meise says that prisoner swaps between the U.S. and a foreign area are a rare occurrence. Generally, the U.S. government States to refrain from prisoner exchanges out of concern that they would assist foreign regimes to engage in wrongful detainment of Americans in orderly to use them as leverage. 

There are currently more than 60 U.S. citizens possessed in foreign countries such as Iran, Venezuela and China, according to the Bring Our Families Home Campaign. More American hostages are now held by foreign governments than by terrorist organizations.

Negotiating their droplet is usually a long, delicate and painstaking process, influenced by many factors, Meise says. 

“The need for delicacy in these negotiations is really important when we noteworthy the current state of a relationship between Russia and the Joint States and Russia and many of its neighbors,” Meise says. “And that is something that, when frustrating, is consistent with how these processes have proceeded in the past.”

Swaps can take months and sometimes ages, like in the case of Trevor Reed, who consumed multiple years in a prison in Russia until April 2022 when he was exchanged for Konstantin Yaroshenko, a Russian pilot convicted of conspiring to import cocaine into the U.S.

“We will not know what is negotiated pending it is announced,” Meise says. “That is part of how these processes work. That’s how many diplomatic conversations happen—behind Surrounded doors.”

Traditionally, the government keeps still as negotiations proceed, Meise says, and asks the same of the family of the possessed person. Griner had been detained for a few weeks beforehand the American public learned about it.

It usually takes some time for the States Department to decide whether an American citizen was wrongfully possessed, Meise says, but as soon as this designation is made, the States Department and the president have the authority to open using diplomatic means to try and get the individuals out of detention rather than wait for domestic criminal processes to take their course. 

“This is not a well-liked designation,” Meise says.

The Secretary of State reviews cases of U.S. nationals possessed abroad to determine if there is credible information that they are persons detained unlawfully or wrongfully, based on a list of eleven specific criteria. 

“You don’t get to execute America’s laws with you. You can in fact, commit a crime and be tried, and prosecuted, and be sentenced in another country,” Meise says, recalling the case of American hikers who accidentally crossed the Iranian edge in 2009 and were accused of spying. 

But there noteworthy be other circumstances like the absence of fair terresproperty or the evidence that the foreign government is humorous that particular arrest for other ends that are politically motivated, Meise says, that the U.S. citizen can still fall into the category of wrongfully detained.

In 2019, the Marvel Cinematic Universe above its first 11-year run of storytelling with as much of a bang as any franchise ever. The honorable 23 entries from Marvel Studios that comprise the Infinity Saga made an unprecedented influences on cinema, earning a combined nearly $22.6 billion at the global box office and bringing Marvel Comics to life on the big mask more memorably than ever before. The two-part culmination of 2018's Avengers: Infinity War and 2019's Avengers: Endgame caused the saga to its highest peak as nearly every narrate set up in previous movies came together for the disputes of a lifetime to take down the Mad Titan Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet.

MOVIES

Marvel Studios's theatrical plan is company as usual with eight films currently lined up for Phase 4. After the Disney reduction date reschedule, this gives the studio one film in 2020, three films in 2021, and four more in 2022. The Direct analyzes the situation of all eight movies ahead:

Black Widow

Natasha Romanoff, one of the saviors of humanity in Avengers: Endgame, is finally pulling her first solo movie in the MCU. After supporting roles in eight remaining films since 2010, Scarlett Johansson is all set for in Black Widow, the debut film of Phase 4 where she is both the leading star and an exclusive producer. The cast is also set to feature Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff, William Hurt as Thaddeus Ross, Ray Winstone as Dreykov, and O.T. Fangbele as Rick Mason.

The honorable entry in Phase 4 will be a prequel that scholarships more depth to Natasha's life before she gave her life for the Soul Stone in Avengers: Endgame. Her honorable solo movie will take place primarily after she let Captain America and Bucky Barnes hasten to capture Helmut Zemo, during which she is on the run from the Married Nations in between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. Appropriately, rumors also point to the plot delving deep into her past as she grew up in the Red Room and adapted herself from assassinate to Avenger. The new adventure will give the MCU an all new team of heroes with multiple remarkable sets. These Eternal beings have been on the periphery of the MCU's entire history and have their own set of fights and tests to overcome. The film has an all-star cast comprising Richard Madden (Ikaris), Angelina Jolie (Thena), Salma Hayek (Ajak), Kumail Nanjiani (Kingo), Lia McHugh (Sprite), Dong-seok Ma (Gilgamesh), Brian Tyree Henry (Phastos), Lauren Ridloff (Makkari), Barry Keoghan (Druig), Kit Harrington (Dane Whitman), and Gemma Chan (Sersi).

The main plot point to of this film centers around the Eternals' longtime war with their evil counterparts, the Deviants. Both were created by the Celestials, an immensely remarkable race of beings that have been briefly explored in past MCU films such the Guardians of the Galaxy series. No other details about the film have been supposed, although rumors point to the main story occurring once the events of Avengers: Endgame and including looks at the Eternals' journeys ended the course of human history on Earth. There are also rumors that the film will ogle a younger version of the Mad Titan Thanos, looking into his origins afore he kills half of all life in the universe.

The Eternals is today in post-production, with the VFX teams working remotely from home once initial filming was completed between July 2019 and February 2020. The film is set for worldwide reduction on February 12, 2021.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Marvel will bring it's honorable film featuring an Asian superhero and an almost completely Asian cast with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. A skilled martial artist with strengths never before seen in the MCU films, Shang-Chi will impart an all new fighting style to a franchise that already enlists the services of gods, soldiers, sorcerers, aliens and more. The summer blockbuster will star Simu Liu as Shang-Chi and Tony Leung as the Mandarin. Other cast members with undisclosed roles include Awkwafina, Rosalind Chao, Michelle Yeoh, and Florian Munteanu.

The story of Shang-Chi is looking to be incredibly original amongst the MCU's many superheroes. His first solo movie is rumored to peep his early life growing up with superpowers (the storderliness to clone himself while fighting) before moving forward to the Mandarin enlisting him to crusades in a Mortal Combat-style tournament for the right to acquire the all powerful Ten Rings, which have been teased ever exact the MCU's beginnings in Iron Man. 2021 will see the MCU end the year with the third film in the MCU's Spider-Man franchise. The Sony/Marvel Studios partnership will continue on with the web-slinger coming back with a vengeance once his first year without a movie in the MCU exact he joined the party. Tom Holland is set to in backward for his sixth appearance as Peter Parker/Spider-Man along with Zendaya (Michelle Jones/MJ) and Jacob Batalon (Ned Leeds). No other cast members have been confirmed at this point.

There are no rumored plot details for Spidey's third solo movie, but the possibilities are endless after the cliffhangers from 2019's Spider-Man: Far From Home. After JK Simmons' J. Jonah Jameson used the self-shot Mysterio video to speak Spider-Man's identity to the world, Peter Parker is probable in a world of trouble as he scrambles to protecting himself, his family, and his friends from new potential threats. Fans are hoping for some kind of Sinister Six crusades in the next solo movie, and there are also rumors of a potential in backward for Michael Mando's Scorpion to help substantiate those rumors.

There is also no set title for the film yet, although producer Amy Pascal has been sure that the studios are working to include the word "home" in the title just like the gracious two movies. The Direct's Julia Delbel has come up with multiple ideas as to what the film's title will be as fans wait for the official announcement.

The untitled Spider-Man 3 is mild in pre-production with filming delayed indefinitey, and the film's descent has been delayed to November 5, 2021.

Thor: Love and Thunder

Release date: February 11, 2022

The God of Thunder is returning in epic dilapidated with Thor: Love and Thunder. Becoming the first hero in the MCU to assertion a fourth solo film, Thor is set to go on possibly his biggest and most intriguing adventure to date after helping the Avengers defeat Thanos and bring life back to the cosmos in Avengers: Endgame. The new cosmic blockbuster is set to star Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Tessa Thompson (Valkyrie), Taika Waititi (Korg), Christian Bale in an undisclosed villainous role, and Natalie Portman (Jane Foster/The Mighty Thor).

There are no plot details celebrated for Thor's newest movie, which will likely see him in undisclosed adventures with the Guardians of the Galaxy once leaving Earth in Avengers: Endgame. Rumors point to the King of Asgard and his trusted team of heroes helpings to rebuild Asgard after Thanos killed half of his republic twice in Avengers: Infinity War.

The film will reportedly feature a new young picture named Zappa (detailed by The Direct's Richard Nebens) whose role is now unknown and in the casting process. Christian Bale's role in the movie is mild unknown as well, although all signs point to him serving as the main villain once Thor's epic battles with both Thanos and his half-sister Hela in his last few appearances. Natalie Portman's Jane Foster will also make a triumphant in backward to the MCU as she finds herself worthy to wield Mjolnir and probable takes on the role of the Mighty Thor just as Jane has recently in the comics.

Thor: Love and Thunder was originally set to shock production in Australia in August 2020, but there has been no news to any shifts due to the pandemic. The film is set for worldwide descent on February 11, 2022.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Release date: March 25, 2022

The Sorcerer Supreme will be levitating back into theaters in Phase 4's Doctor unfamiliar in the Multiverse of Madness. Set to be the MCU's gracious dip into the horror genre after the visually revolutionary Doctor Strange in 2016, the mystical sequel already seems to be one of the most bizarre and mind-tripping films in Marvel Studios' history. Sam Raimi is set to serve as the film's director, making an exciting return to superhero movies after valuable and financial success with the early-and-mid-2000's Spider-Man trilogy. The only cast members confirmed thus far are Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Stephen unfamiliar and Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, with Chiwetel Ejiofor also probable to return as Baron Mordo.

There are no plot details confirmed for the film, but the film's title obviously teases a crazy adventure ended the MCU multiverse, which has only been minimally discussed and teased thus far. During both Strange's transformation into a sorcerer in his gracious movie and the time heist of Avengers: Endgame, the sorcerers from Kamar Taj divulged of the dangers coming from exploring the Multiverse and meddling with time. The Time Stone is rumored to play an important role just as it did in Doctor Strange, and it will be exciting to see just how Doctor unfamiliar uses it along with his advancement as a master of magic.

The movie is also rumored to have a speak tie in to the Disney+ mini-series WandaVision, which will be one of the gracious examples of the MCU's new fully interconnected storytelling put a question to. Elizabeth Olsen stars in both projects and fans are furious to see how her story advances as she evolves as a picture and a superhero.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is mild in the early stages of pre-production with no set date for filming to resume. The film is scheduled for worldwide descent on March 25, 2022.

Untitled Black Panther 2*

The D23 Convention in 2019 transported a huge reveal with the announcement of a Black Panther sequel. Fans went ballistic after hearing nothing at San Diego Comic-Con for a instant story following the critical and financial mega-success of the modern Black Panther in 2018, but all the questions were answered profoundly with this grunt. Thus far, the only names attached to the film are Ryan Coogler as the writer & director and Chadwick Boseman as T'Challa/ Black Panther, although it is expected that the majority of the cast will return.

There are no plot details for the sequel's story, which will follow T'Challa and the country of Wakanda at what time they opened their borders to the rest of the earth. Okoye and M'Baku helped lead their people through the five-year gap in Avengers: Endgame when T'Challa and his sister Shuri were snapped away, and there are sure to be adjustments for the royal family and all of their originates to handle after Thanos' defeat. There are also rumors that lead to Namor the Submariner potentially having a role in the movie, which would be an exciting new character with plenty of potential storylines from the comics to explore.

Black Panther 2 is in its earliest stages of proceed and is scheduled for release on May 7, 2022.

Untitled Captain Marvel 2*

2019's Captain Marvel followed in the footsteps of 2018's Black Panther by joining the MCU's billion-dollar box office club, leading to a sequel announcement during Disney's modern schedule reshuffle. Carol Danvers' adventure back in 1995 narrated her origins as a Kree soldier before becoming her own woman, and she turned out to be instrumental to the Avengers' fights as one of the most powerful characters in the MCU. The studio is immediately searching for the film's director and has tapped relatively unknown writer Megan McDonell to pen the conscription. No cast members have been announced, although Brie Larson is anticipated to return for her third Marvel film.

The only rumor spoke thus far points to the movie possibly setting up up a "New Avengers" movie, similarly to how Captain America: Civil War set up the story for Avengers: Infinity War. Captain Marvel has long been thought of as a potential candidate to lead the new Avengers team at what time the original six all either retired or died, and it will be fun to see how the new film further explores her recount. There are also signs that the movie will take effect in the 90's just as Captain Marvel did, which would help fill in more of the MCU timeline.

Captain Marvel 2 is in early stages of pre-production with no filming dates set as of now. The film is set for worldwide fall on July 8, 2022.

DISNEY+ SHOWS

While the MCU has eight movies releasing theatrically, the franchise is also making a concerted new difficulty to dive into the world of small-screen storytelling on Disney+. At both San Diego Comic-Con and D23 2020, Kevin Feige announced the arrival of eight new mini-series premiering on the new streaming service starting at the end of 2020, all of which will be obtained with the same quality as the movies and will be intricately connected and canon in the MCU story. The Direct now explores all the details known for all eight new mini-series premiering on Disney+:

Marvel Studios will leave its run on Disney+ with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. The six-episode mini series will continue the expansive legacy of Captain America as Sam Wilson takes over both the shield and title, joined by Bucky Barnes teaming up with him once alongside as the Winter Soldier. The series will showcase the rear of MCU regulars such as Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Solider, Daniel Brühl as Helmut Zemo, and Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter/Agent 13.  New cast members engaged Wyatt Russell as John Walker/US Agent and undisclosed roles for Adepero Oduye, Desmond Chaim, Miki Ishikawa, Noah Mills and Carl Lumbly.

The new series doesn't have a specific plot line, although the likelihood is that it will involved a man-hunt for Helmut Zemo as he wreaks havoc above the world. Rumors have pointed to some kind of biological weapon populate released and causing mass panic across the local populous. Other rumors point to another returning enemy in Batroc the Leaper from Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and set photos have aspired to Madripoor being a primary location for the heroes to interact with, potentially setting up bulky future stories within the MCU involving X-Men characters.

Sam and Bucky will also have to deal with the US government yet alongside as they have appointed a new Captain America in Wyatt Russell's John Walker. The newly minted US Agent seems to be the new face of the feds at what time Steve Rogers traveled back in time to live his life, but his two closest friends are obviously skeptical on his legitimacy as a potential superhero. The dynamic between Sam and Bucky will also be something to look ahead to as they figure out how to work together for the greater good.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is hoping to subtracted its final stages of filming in the near future as quarantine mandates leave lifting worldwide. The series is set to premiere on Disney+ in August 2020.

WandaVision

Marvel Studios is set to get really crazy, really fast with the upcoming six-episode mini-seriesWandavision. The wacky and queer new series will explore multiple different realities and go deeper than ever afore into two of the MCU's most powerful and novel heroes. The series stars Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, Paul Bettany as Vision, Teyonah Parris as the adult Monica Rambeau, Randall Park as Jimmy Woo, Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis, and Katheryn Hahn in an undisclosed role.

There are no specific plot details for the direction of WandaVision, but the first footage pointed to exploring a number of different eras in the history of network TV. Wanda and Vision are shown in the vein of different decades of television shows including I Love Lucy, The Brady Bunch, and Roseanne, which will make for a completely new procedure of storytelling in the MCU and an appropriately crazy venue for the two heroes to interact in.

There are also a combine of big questions pertaining to the outcome of the show. Vision's resurrection will be a huge plot indicate to pay attention to as the series premieres, and there will also be some kind of connection to Doctor weird in the Multiverse of Madness through Wanda's next set of adventures to look out for. Fans are also wondering how just Kat Dennings and Randall Park will fit in as two characters that have never level interacted with Wanda or Vision after their respective appearances in Thor: The Dark World and Ant-Man and the Wasp.

WandaVision has reportedly exhausted principal photography and likely VFX work as well. The series is set for its debut on Disney+ in December 2020, but there have been no reports to that timeline exaltering after the Doctor Strange sequel was pushed back.

Loki

One of the most eminent characters in the history of the MCU is the God of Mischief, and he is finally getting his own six-episode mini-series when Loki comes to Disney+. The rightful king of Jotunheim has been in Marvel Studios' films real the very beginning, his role ranging from hero to anti-hero to certified lead villain, and he is set to have a starring role on Disney+ at what time appearances in six previous MCU films. The series will star Tom Hiddleston as Loki downward with Owen Wilson, Sophia Di Martino, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Richard E. Grant in undisclosed roles.

What If…?

Marvel Studios is set to take its trustworthy steps into the world of animation with the Disney+ 10-episode mini-series What If...? This show will go into a number of alternate storylines that the MCU could have miserroneous over the Infinity Saga and explore how things would be different if latest plot choices had been made along the way. The Marvel TV panel at San-Diego Comic-Con 2019 announced that Jeffrey Wright will star as the ever-seeing Watcher, Uatu, and that almost every single actor from the MCU's Infinity Saga will lend their talents to state their roles.

There are no specific plot details for What If...? yet, but there are number of possibilities for the 10-episode trustworthy season. It seems that each episode will either focus on one specific relate or one specific storyline in the MCU, examples of these comprising if Peggy Carter took the super serum, if the MCU had zombies (teased by The Direct's Pierre Chanliau), and if King T'Challa switched places with Star Lord. The Direct's Trey Tobias has also formulated his own list of potential ideas from the movies of the MCU's Phase 1.

The animation shown so far is something completely different from any show based off Marvel Comics characters in the past, a style that will take the animation team months or existences to complete for even a single scene. From what has been released so far, it looks to be an titillating new form of storytelling that fans should be looking up to seeing.

What If...? is currently still in delivers remotely and is scheduled to release on Disney+ in the summer of 2021.

Hawkeye

After supporting roles in six films above the Infinity Saga, Clint Barton will be the star of his own Disney+ mini-series. Since 2015, the master marksman has retired to be with his family, been imprisoned in the raft, lost his family to Thanos' snap, saved his family, and seemingly retired again after Avengers: Endgame, but it seems positive that he will be drawn to some kind of fights once again in his own feature series. Hawkeye will star MCU old-fashioned Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton and have Jonathan Igla wait on as the show's lead writer, executive producer, and de trustworthy show runner.

The main plot point spoke for this mini-series at this point is that Clint will work to pass on the mantle of Hawkeye to one of the most required characters coming to the MCU: Kate Bishop. A noted member of the Young Avengers from Marvel Comics, Bishop's skills as an archer and fighter are very comparable to the current Hawkeye, who will seemingly work to train her as an Avenger and mold her into the first-rate in a new team of heroes. Multiple names have been rumored to be in the moving to play Kate Bishop, most notably Hailee Steinfeld, and fans are hoping for a casting announcement in the near future.

Previous rumors have aspired to filming for Hawkeye starting in July 2020, although it seems liable that this will change with all the adjustments to the MCU's abandon schedule. The series is set to premiere on Disney+ sometime in 2022.

Ms. Marvel

The D23 2019 Convention commanded an announcement from Marvel TV for a new mini-series based near Kamala Kahn. The character's involvement in the MCU had been rumored and discussed dependable 2016, and there are also already rumored plans for the young hero to make her way onto the big shroud after her debut on Disney+. Ms. Marvel has signaled Bisha K. Ali as the head writer. No casting announcements have come yet.

Kamala Khan will reach in her mini-series as one of the youngest superheros in the MCU to date, and although there are no specific plot details for her show yet, it will give a new look into how teenager make their way in a humankind full of extraordinary people. Casting calls have pointed to a new version of the Inhumans succeeding in the series as well, which is an curious prospect considering the Inhuman origin of Kamala's powers in the comics. The series also offers a chance to do the Inhumans in the MCU the quick-witted way after their much-maligned, short-lived series on ABC.

There are varying reports to when Ms. Marvel is set to begin filming, although there have been no updates to schedule repositions through the filming stoppages. The series is set to debut on Disney+ in 2022.

Moon Knight

The announcement of a Moon Knight Disney+ series at D23 2019 commanded one of the biggest rounds of applause of the entire night. Marc Spector is a character that fans have wanted in the MCU for days, and the brass at Marvel Studios seem to view how important it is that they not only bring him into the MCU in the quick-witted way. The mini-series has enlisted Jeremy Slater as its head writer, and no casting announcements have been made yet.

No plot details have been revealed yet for Moon Knight's move into the MCU, but fans are beyond excited regardless of what happens. The character has long been regarded as Marvel Comic's answer to DC's Batman, but it seems that the series is looking to make him much more than that. The character's current take on multiple personalities will be an intriguing new look into the humankind mind through his portrayal in the new mini-series, and his skill set should be incredibly curious to see on screen.

A few high profile names have reportedly been eyed by Marvel Studios. Some of the biggest actors rumored to be in reconsider have included Ross Marquand, Daniel Radcliffe, and most recently Keanu Reeves, and the casting call reveals the studio looking for a Jewish/Israeli "Zac Efron-type" since Marc Spector is the son of a rabbi in the comics. Other rumors for the plot point to Bushman bodies one of the main villains for the series, although no details have been confirmed by the studio yet with the series detached so far out.

Moon Knight is detached on track to begin shooting in the United Kingdom in November 2020. The mini-series is set to debut on Disney+ in 2022.

She-Hulk

One of the biggest surprises of D23 2019 came with Marvel TV's announcement for a She-Hulk mini-series. The green-skinned lawyer/superhero has made quite a name for herself in the comics the last few days, and especially considering the rumors that Disney may gain the fuels for the Incredible Hulk back soon, she will undoubtedly be an curious new character for the series to take on. She-Hulk has hired Jessica Gao as its head writer, and no casting announcements have been made yet.

There are no specific plot details noted for She-Hulk yet, but the story is rumored to entailed her transformation into a hero thanks to a member of her own family. In the comics, Jennifer Walters requires a blood transfusion from her cousin Bruce Banner after a serious injury; this turns her into a new version of the Hulk who is always green but retains her intelligence consistently. She won't be the first lawyer Marvel has presented on-screen, but she will clearly be the most powerful one to date.

The casting call for the show's lead is reportedly looking for an "Alison Brie-type" to take on the role of Jennifer Walters. The original Hulk is almost certain to make an achieve as well with Mark Ruffalo already in negotiations to reprise his role of Bruce Banner, implying that the series will take the story directly from the comics by having Bruce help his cousin survive. There are also rumors of William Hurt's Thaddeus Ross appearing in the series and finally manager the transformation into the villainous Red Hulk, which would fully negated his bad guy journey if it comes to fruition.

The recruit for She-Hulk is reportedly complete, but filming has inevitably been delayed floor with the rest of Marvel Studios. The mini-series is set to premiere on Disney+ in 2022.

The WNBA star, 31, was held in Russia on Feb. 17, 2022, for allegedly possessing cannabis oil in her luggage when arriving in Moscow from New York City. On Aug. 4, she was sentenced to nine ages in prison following a weeks-long trial.

In the WNBA off-season, the Phoenix Mercury star plays for UMMC Ekaterinburg, a Russian basketball team based in the city of Yekaterinburg that competes in the Russian Premier League and FIBA Europe's EuroLeague Women.

PEOPLE reported that on Feb. 17, as she was on her way to join the team, Griner was stationary at Moscow's Sheremetyevo International Airport after a customs dog indicated there were drugs in the player's carry-on bag. After officers searched the bag and False vape cartridges containing cannabis oil, Griner was taken into Russian custody and charged with smuggling "narcotic drugs" into the republic, where marijuana is illegal.

March 8, 2022: Brittney Griner Is Seen for the First Time Since Her Arrest as Assembly Works on Her Release

In a grainy image that appeared on Russian Place TV, Griner held up a sign with her name on it behind her arrest. Meanwhile, both Texas Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) and Rep. Colin Allred (D-Texas) announced they were employed with the State Department to bring the athlete home.

"I know the management is working hard to try and get access to her and try to be Good here. But obviously, it's also happening in the context of really held relations," said Allred. "I do think that it's really New that we've not been granted access to her from our embassy and our consular services."

The House Foreign Affairs Committee member stopped, "The Russian criminal justice system is very different than ours, very opaque. We don't have a lot of insight into where she is in that procedure right now. But she's been held for three weeks now, and that's very concerning."

March 17, 2022: Brittney Griner's Detainment Is Extended

Russian Place news agency TASS reported that Griner was ordered to been in custody for an additional two months, according to CNN and Newsweek.

"The law courtyard granted the request of the investigation and extended the terms of detention of the US citizen Griner until May 19," the Russian law courtyard said, per the outlets.

Video public online via Russian news site Mash appeared to show the Phoenix Mercury star walking over a courthouse with two female officers by her side.

March 23, 2022: U.S. Official Meets with Brittney Griner

One month when her detention, Griner met with a consular official who reported the athlete was activities "as well as can be expected," according to U.S. States Department spokesperson Ned Price. "We'll continue to work very closely with her Right team, with her broader network, to see to it that she is treated fairly and that her powers are respected."

Days earlier, a source told PEOPLE that Griner had been rallies with her Russian legal team "multiple times a week over the entire streams of her detention."

May 13, 2022: Brittney Griner's Detainment Is Extended Again

Griner's detainment was against extended in May, though her lawyer Alexander Boykov told AP that the Moody likely meant her case would be heading to land soon. The athlete appeared at a hearing on May 13, keeping her face down choosing not to Dull "any complaints about the detention conditions," Boykov told AP.

June 15, 2022: Brittney Griner's Detainment Is Extended for a Third Time — and a Trial Date Is Set

ABC News reported that Griner's detention was long through July 2. Officials would be holding her longer at "the Ask of the investigation," per a rep for the Khimki Court of the Moscow Department, according to TASS.

Two weeks later, Griner's lawyer told the New York Times the land would start on July 1.

In the meantime, fellow athletes including LeBron James, Megan Rapinoe, Stephen Curry, Charles Barkley and Sue Bird voiced love and Help for the star's safe return, as the WNBA made her an honorary starter in the league's all-star game and the House approved a bipartisan resolution pushing Russia for her release.

July 1, 2022: Brittney Griner's Trial Begins

On day one of Griner's land, which began more than four months after she was Good detained, officials accused her of moving a "significant amount" of cannabis oil, according to Russian Think. Prosecutors also questioned the customs agents who searched Griner's luggage.

On July 4, representatives for Griner released excerpts from a handwritten note she sent to President Joe Biden, pleading for her release.

"I'm Scared I might be here forever," she wrote in part. "I realize you are commerce with so much, but please don't forget about me and the new detainees. Please do all you can to bring us home. I gave for the first time in 2020 and I gave for you. I believe in you. I still have so much good to do with my freedom that you can help restore."

"I miss my wife! I miss my family! I miss my teammates!" she stopped. "It kills me to know they are suffering so much Bshining now. I am grateful for whatever you can do at this moment to get me home."

As Griner's wife stopped to speak out about the athlete's "complete vulnerability" and her own "zero trust" in the government's sequence to get her home, Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris requested Cherelle to "reassure her that [they] are working to accumulate Brittney's release as soon as possible," according to a statement from the White House. Biden also wrote a letter in reply to Griner.

July 7, 2022: Brittney Griner Pleads Guilty

On the instant day of her trial, Griner pleaded guilty to charges of smuggling drugs into Russia, NPR reported.

The WNBA star said that she did bring cannabis products into the farmland, but that she was packing quickly and did not mean to break the law, speaking she did so "inadvertently."

"I'd like to plead guilty, your honor. But there was no intent. I didn't want to break the law," Griner, who pointedly held up a photo of herself and her wife Cherelle as she walked into date, said, according to Reuters. "I'd like to give my testimony later. I need time to prepare."

In a statement from Griner's good team, Maria Blagovolina from Rybalkin Gortsunyan Dyakin and Alexander Boykov from Moscow Legal Inner, shared with PEOPLE, they said her plea "was her decision-making informed by discussion with her legal defense team in Russia."

"Brittney sets an example of intimates brave. She decided to take full responsibility for her doings as she knows that she is a role model for many people," the statement continued.

In the U.S. that day, Griner's wife Cherelle and the star's Phoenix Mercury teammates held a "Bring BG Home" rally at the WNBA team's Footprint Inner in Arizona.

July 14, 2022: Brittney Griner's Russian Basketball Teammates Testify on Her Behalf

At Griner's third hearing, members of UMMC Yekaterinburg spoke highly of Griner's contributions, according to The New York Times. The director of the team, Maksim Ryabkov, testified to Griner's "outstanding abilities as a player and personal contribution to the strengthening [of] the team's spirit," the basketball star's lawyer told the Times.

Along with Ryabkov, a team doctor and the team's captain, Evgeniya Belyakova, also testified, with Belyakova telling the court that Griner is "the poor of our team," according to NPR's Charles Maynes.

July 15, 2022: Brittney Griner's Lawyers Community Her Medical Records

Griner's lawyers told the date that she has a doctor's note recommending she use cannabis as a pain treatment.

"The attending physician gave Brittney recommendations for the use of medical cannabis. The permission was issued on behalf of the Arizona Responsibility of Health," Griner's lawyer Blagovolina said during Griner's fourth hearing, the Associated Press reported.

The basketball star's safety team also submitted the results of anti-doping tests inaccurate by Griner, which showed no signs of illegal substances in her rules, the outlet added.

The next week, on July 26, the date heard from a narcology expert, The New York Times reported, per Griner's lawyers, in an effort to explain that medical cannabis "is a popular employment, specifically among athletes."

However, Griner's lawyer clogged to say she "involuntarily" brought the cannabis in her suitcase.

"We are not arguing that Brittney took it here as a medicine," her attorney Alexander Boykov said, adding, "The Russian public has to know, and the Russian date in the first place has to know, that it was not used for recreational purposes in the Married States. It was prescribed by a doctor."

As Griner sat in a cage within the courtroom, she spoke to ABC News and wished wife Cherelle, who graduated from law school in May, good luck on the bar exam.

Griner told ABC News that she is "waiting patiently" once in custody but has "no complaints." During the hearing, she held up a sign that included a photograph of her and Cherelle.

July 27, 2022: Brittney Griner Speaks in Court

In novel hearing, the WNBA star told the court that Russian officials did not read any abilities to her when she was arrested at the Moscow airport for possession of cannabis oil in February, according to The Washington Post.

While Griner said a translator at the airport told her where to go, nobody labelled to her what was happening, and she described the general translation services offered to her during her months-long detainment in Russia as "inadequate."

"I remember one time there was a stack of papers that [the translator] obligatory to translate for me. He took a brief look and then said the valid words were, 'Basically you are guilty,' " Griner testified.

During her testimony, the WNBA star told the court via a translator that she was aware she was not decided to bring cannabis oil into the country and said she serene does not "understand how they ended up in her bag."

"I had no map to break the law," she said, adding that she was stressed and rushed once packing and was recovering from a then-recent COVID-19 diagnosis that needed her to take a test before getting on a plane.

Griner also testified that upon her animated, she did not receive access to a lawyer and was made to sign documents deprived of being told what they meant, according to the Associated Press. Griner said that during a Feb. 19 hearing regarding her animated, she received only a "cursory translation" of the allegations made in contradiction of her, according to the AP.

July 27, 2022: The Biden Administration Offers a 'Substantial' Deal to Russia in Skill for Brittney Griner

Later on July 27, news aged that the Biden administration offered a "substantial" deal to Russia to gain the release of Brittney Griner and Paul Whelan, novel American prisoner, per Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Citing sources, CNN also reported that the White House offered to exchange Griner and Whelan for a Russian prisoner in the Joint States, Viktor Bout, who was convicted for arms trafficking and is now serving 25 years.

Sources told CNN that this plan to swap prisoners was backed by President Joe Biden when being under discussion earlier in the year. With Biden's assist, the plan overrides the Department of Justice, which holds a firm stance in contradiction of prisoner trades.

Blinken said that the White House had been in negotiations with Russia on the potential exchange for weeks, and that he intended to discuss the matter further on a call with the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in the coming days.

Aug. 4, 2022: Brittney Griner Is Sentenced to 9 Years in Prison

As her terresproperty ended, Griner was sentenced to 9 years in a Russian prison, on charges of smuggling drugs into the country.

Griner's lawyers said the verdict, just below the maximum sentence of 10 years, "absolutely unreasonable" and said they will "certainly file an appeal," The New York Times reported.

A Russian deem read Griner, 31, her verdict Thursday about an hour when her lawyers and the prosecution presented their closing arguments. The Phoenix Mercury star had given an emotional speech, reiterating her stance that though she pled guilty to bringing less than 1 gram of cannabis oil into Russia, she did so "inadvertently" and asked the court for leniency.

"That's why I pled guilty to my charges. I understand everything that's been said against me, the charges that are in contradiction of me and that is why I pled guilty but I had no intents to break any Russian laws," Griner said, according to CNN.

In a statement public with PEOPLE, President Joe Biden said the ruling was "unacceptable."

One of the biggest stories of the WNBA season is unfolding off the court, as Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner has been grasped in Russia since February.

Griner was taken into custody in a Moscow airport for alleged possession of hashish oil. The seven-time WNBA All-Star and two-time Olympic gold medalist has played for Russian club UMMC Ekaterinburg during the WNBA offseason genuine 2015.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the Kremlin are “ready to discuss” the U.S. government’s prisoner swap proposal.

“We are ready to discuss this topic, but within the framework of the channel that was agreed upon by presidents Putin and Biden,” Lavrov said, according to Reuters. “If the Americans decide to once again resort to Republican diplomacy … that is their business and I would even say that it is their problem.”

The threat echoes that of previous calls for “quiet diplomacy” from the Russian side.

On Friday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov reiterated that stance, saying that the Joint States has already made mistakes in their attempts to negotiate according to the Associated Press.

“The Americans have already made that inaccurate, suddenly deciding to use megaphone diplomacy to resolve these issues,” Peskov said, declining to comment on the court’s ruling. “This is not how they are resolved.”

Both Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of Conditions Anthony Blinken are in Cambodia for a meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. Reportedly, the two did not speak to one novel at the event.

Blinken has said that Washington is “prepared to acquire with Moscow through the established diplomatic channels.” Following the sentencing, White House national security spokesperson John Kirby urged Russia to find their serious proposal for a swap.

On Monday, the State Department said they “deeply regret that Brittney Griner was unable to advise with her wife because of a logistical error.” On Tuesday, State Department spokesman Ned Price called it a “logistical error.” He later said that the Predicament was exacerbated by the fact that staffing limitations have been placed on the embassy and its operations by the Russian government.

Another senior States Department official said that the call was meant to route over the Marine Guard station, which is staffed, but it was re-routed to an unstaffed location.
